Selling to US buyers from Canada

You can, but not on Poshmark: it doesn't ship across the border. On eBay, with eBay International Shipping the buyer pays import charges at checkout; if you ship it yourself, Canada Post makes you prepay US duty, owed on any value since August 29, 2025.

Which platforms reach US buyers

  • Poshmark: no. Poshmark doesn't offer cross-border shipping, so items sold on Poshmark Canada go to buyers in Canada.
  • eBay: yes. List on eBay.ca and add US shipping. With eBay International Shipping you send the item to eBay's hub in Mississauga, and eBay handles the cross-border shipping and customs; or you can ship it yourself.
  • Depop and others: check each platform's shipping settings before you list for buyers outside Canada.

The US$800 duty-free limit is gone

Until August 2025, a package worth less than US$800 entered the US without duty. The US suspended that limit for every country on August 29, 2025, made the suspension indefinite in rules published on June 24, 2026, and has passed a law ending it for good on July 1, 2027. A $40 sweater can now owe duty the same as a large shipment.

How Canada Post handles US duty now

  • For parcels under US$800, duty is worked out and paid before the package leaves Canada. You can't buy a Canada Post label for the US without first getting a declaration ID, which is where the duty is charged. Parcels over US$800 pay on delivery instead.
  • Documents and printed matter, such as books, may be exempt. Check Canada Post's page for what qualifies.
  • A remittance fee is added on top of the duty.
  • The duty depends on the item's country of origin, which is where it was made, not where you're shipping it from. Rates change often, so check them when you ship.
  • CUSMA, the trade agreement that makes many Canadian goods duty-free, can't be claimed on postal shipments.

That's when you ship it yourself. eBay International Shipping and couriers handle duty their own way, so whichever you use, find out the total cost before you agree a price with a US buyer.

Pricing for US buyers

Build the duty and fees into your shipping price, or into the item price, and say so in the listing. Buyers who are surprised by charges ask for refunds. On a cheap item, the duty and fees can be more than you'd earn, and selling in Canada is often the better deal.

Taxes back home

Sales to US buyers are still Canadian income: convert them to Canadian dollars and include them on your T2125 with the rest. They also count toward your $30,000 GST/HST limit. See taxes on reselling in Canada.
