Reselling in Canada vs the US

The apps look the same, but Canadian resellers pay GST/HST on Poshmark's fees, are reported to the CRA after just 30 sales or $2,800, and can't sell to US buyers on Poshmark. Most US advice about fees, taxes and shipping doesn't apply here.

Fees: the same apps, different numbers

Poshmark, eBay and Depop all charge Canadian sellers differently from US sellers. The biggest gap is Depop: it dropped its 10% selling fee in the US in July 2024 but still charges it in Canada. Canadian sellers also pay GST/HST on Poshmark's fees at their province's rate, and eBay says GST/HST may apply to its fees too. US calculators leave this out.

For Canadian numbers, use the Poshmark, eBay, Depop and Facebook Marketplace calculators, or compare all five platforms for one price.

Platforms you can and can't use

  • Poshmark runs separate Canadian and US marketplaces and doesn't ship across the border, so a Canadian closet sells to Canadian buyers.
  • eBay.ca lets you offer shipping to the US, which makes it the simplest way to reach US buyers. See selling to US buyers from Canada.
  • Vinted closed in Canada in February 2024. See is Vinted available in Canada?
  • Kijiji is Canada's own local marketplace, with no selling fee.

Taxes

In Canada, buying things to resell for a profit is business income, reported on form T2125 with your income tax return. Selling your own used things for less than you paid generally isn't taxed. See taxes on reselling in Canada.

Sales tax works differently too. In the US, marketplaces such as eBay collect state sales tax from buyers for you. In Canada, platforms collect GST/HST from buyers for sellers who aren't registered, but once your own sales (plus any other business income) pass $30,000 in four calendar quarters, or in a single quarter, you must register and charge it yourself. Check how close you are.

When platforms report you

Platforms report a Canadian seller to the CRA once they make 30 or more sales, or are paid more than $2,800, on that platform in a calendar year. That's far lower than the US threshold: a 1099-K goes to the IRS only above US$20,000 and 200 sales. Being reported doesn't mean you owe tax. Check whether you'll be reported.

Shipping

Poshmark Canada ships with a C$12.49 Canada Post label, or C$6.99 for a Purolator pickup where it's offered, and the buyer pays for it. Poshmark's US labels are priced in US dollars for USPS, so US advice about shipping costs won't match yours. On eBay and Depop you set your own shipping price, so check Canada Post's rates before you list.

Selling across the border

Since August 29, 2025, goods sent to the US owe US duty whatever their value. If you ship a parcel under US$800 yourself with Canada Post, you prepay the duty when you buy the label. With eBay International Shipping, the buyer pays import charges at checkout instead. Either way, small sales to US buyers are less worthwhile than they used to be. How selling to US buyers works now.
